Baseball Trumps Thunder

Baseball Takes on Cardinal Sunday, April 21

WHEATON, Ill. - After a long week of home games, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team traveled to Wheaton, Ill. to play the Thunder of Wheaton College Wednesday, April 17 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup. The Titans surpassed the Thunder in a 9-1 win bringing IWU's record to 20-9 and 9-3 in conference, while WC falls to 7-19 and 1-10 in the CCIW.

In the top of the first junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) scored an easy first run against the Thunder by hitting a triple to left center, before scoring on a wild pitch to bring the Titans to a quick 1-0 lead. Two at bats later, sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) slammed the ball past the fences to earn his second home run of the season and continue the Titans lead 2-0 to end the half inning.

The Thunder could not respond in the bottom of the first but was able to get a quick three outs in the top of the second against IWU to keep the score at 2-0.

Senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) started off with a walk in the top of the third. Perona was able to steal second and put himself in good position for junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) to hit a double down the left line to get Perona home and bring the Titans to 3-0.

Wheaton was close to scoring in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded and one out but sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was able to notch a strikeout and force a ground out to second, keeping the Thunder at zero.

Perona was walked again to open the fifth inning, while Gadomski in the next at bat hit a single to right field, advancing Perona to third. WC's pitcher struggled on the mound, walking both Woltman and  Flagg in back-to-back at bats to give the Green and White an easy run with a 4-0 lead. With bases still loaded, freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was at the plate with two outs and hit a sinker to left field to run in both Gadomski and Woltman to take a 6-0 lead.

With a double play and a strikeout looking in the bottom of the fifth, the Titans moved to start the top of the sixth off strong. IWU was able to score once more in the inning when junior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) tripled just short of the fences on the right field line. With an error by the Wheaton defense, junior Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) was able to get on base and let Gurgone score, as the Titans climbed to 7-0.

Wheaton claimed its first run in the bottom of the sixth, ending the inning 7-1 in favor of the Titans.

Perona was 2-for-3 on the game, finishing with a home run into right center to stretch the IWU lead to 8-1. With Gadomski on base with a hit by pitch, Woltman doubled down the left field line to put Gadomski in scoring position on third. Senior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) made his first at bat appearance of the game, slugging a single into center field to run Gadomski home.

The final score was 9-1 with no runs from the Thunder in the bottom of the ninth.

IWU continues on the road this weekend in another CCIW matchup against Carthage College, Sunday, April 21. The Green and White will travel to Kenosha, Wis. to play at Augie Schmidt Stadium at 1 p.m.
