Titans Extinguish Firebirds

IWU host Elmhurst Saturday, April 20 for Senior Day

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team continued its undefeated streak in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with an 18-13 victory over Carthage College Saturday, April 13. IWU moves to 8-3 on the season and 3-0 in CCIW action while Carthage falls to 6-7 and 0-2 in the CCIW.

Sophomore Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) had a career day to lead IWU to its seventh straight win this season. Dretzka led the Titans with a career-high seven points off five goals and two assists. Junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) had the second most points with five off of two goals and three assists. Eight more Titans scored against the Firebirds.

Senior Michael Campagna (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Saint Viator) anchored IWU's defense with a team lead seven ground balls while sophomore Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) and junior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) tied for a team-high two caused turnovers apiece. Senior Zo Lombardo (Elgin, Ill.-Saint Viator) was 10-for-23 at the X while junior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) was good for 5-of-11 faceoffs. Junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) spent all four quarters in the net, totaling 13 saves for a .500 save percentage.

With the game just two minutes underway, Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) sunk the first goal of the game before junior Jake Gisi (Wentzville, Mo.-Chaminade College Prep) put the Titans up 2-0 in the first quarter. The Firebirds answered with a goal 30 seconds later but Gammelgaard's dish to Weinberg kept the Titans with a two-point lead, 3-1. In the last five minutes of the quarter, Weinberg picked up his second goal of the game while Carthage net one to bring the score to 4-2 heading into the second.

Dretzka shook off a Firebird defender on his way to an unassisted goal to get the Titans rolling at the start of the second quarter. Dretzka dished to Black before senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) moved IWU into a five-goal lead, 7-2. A Carthage goal interrupted the Green and White's 3-0 scoring run. Nevertheless, IWU scored two more goals courtesy of Dretzka and senior Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) to lead 9-4 heading into halftime.

Carthage put away the first goal out of the break to cut the Titan lead to four. Black secured a hat trick thanks to an assist by freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) to lead 10-5. Following a Carthage goal, three scoreless minutes would be interrupted by Illinois Wesleyan sinking a pair of goals just 10 seconds apart from each other senior Ethan Hart (Littleton, Colo.-J.K. Mullen), and freshman Jarrett Brunson (Marshall, WIs.-Sun Prairie East) got in on the scoring action to double the score at 12-6. The rest of the third quarter saw a 4-3 scoring advantage for the Titans, highlighted by a man-up goal by Dretzka and goals by McHugh, Seeley, and Campagna.

The final 15 minutes saw the Firebirds score the opening goal of the quarter but a pair of goals by Dretzka extended the Titan lead by eight, 18-10. Carthage fought back with three straight goals to bring the score back within five but IWU would maintain the 18-13 lead to close out the game.

IWU hosts Elmhurst University at Tucci Stadium next Saturday, April 20 for Senior Day.
