Baseball Takes Two Game Victory Over Vikings

Game tomorrow against Monmouth

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After a pregame recognition of Head Coach Dennis Martell and his retirement, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team extended its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win streak to four with two wins over Augustana College Saturday, April 13. After the doubleheader, the Titans are 18-9 overall and 8-3 in the CCIW. The Vikings move to 16-12 overall, and 3-7 in conference.

Game One: Titans 4, Vikings 3

The Vikings started off the scoring early with two runs in the top of the first forcing the Titans into a 2-0 trailing position early in the game.

Neither team scored in the second inning but the Titans found the momentum in the bottom of the third to put numbers on the board. Senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) started the Titans off with a single. Perona stole second and then took third base on a fly ball by junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg). Sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was next up to bat and slammed the ball past the fences for a two-run home run, tying up the score 2-2.

The Vikings took back the 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from the Vikings catcher.

The Titans did not let up as they took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Bufflao Grove) started off with a base hit to right center. Sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) singled to left field to run Figus to second. Sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) had the play of the game, tricking the infielders with a show-bunt situation before taking a full swing down the right line to end up with an RBI double bringing Figus in to tie up the game. Perona walked and with bases loaded Gadomski was able to hit a sacrifice fly to center field to run in Gurgone and give the Titans a 4-3 lead.

Sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was the winning pitcher of the game bringing his record to 5-0, and added two strikeouts. Figus, Flagg, and Perona were all two-for-four today as a game-high.

Game Two: IWU 6, Vikings 0

The second game remained scoreless into the fifth where freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) landed a slap that took the ball to the fences, earning himself a double with an error to reach third. Senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) then reached on a fielder's choice as the catcher made an error to give Ferraro the first run of the game.

Continuing in the fifth, Figus then hit a missile down the right field line to earn a two-bagger and advance Cyrus to third easily. Gurgone was next up to bat with a sacrifice fly to bring Cyrus home and advance Figus to third. Willard finished off the inning with a single to bring Figus in for the last run of the inning, as the Titans took a 3-0 lead.

Hitting was stagnant for both IWU and AC in the sixth but IWU found more strength to pick up some runs in the seventh. Cyrus started off by reaching on a fielder's choice as AC tagged out Ferraro who had previously walked. Junior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) made his first at-bat appearance and nailed one into left field to run Cyrus to third but with a muffed throw Cyrus was able to slide home, earning another run for the Titans. The Green and White scored another run in the seventh from a Perona double to run Gurgone in for a 5-0 advantage.

IWU scored once more in the eighth with Woltman kicking it off with a double to left center before senior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) hit a sacrifice fly to finish the game with a final score of 6-0.

Sophomore Will Davidmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown) took the win on the bump as the starting pitcher while Cyrus earned his first save of the season. Willard finished out the game three-for-three earning a perfect finish for the second game.

The Titans take on nonconference foe Monmouth College tomorrow April 14 at Jack Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. Game is set to start at 1 p.m. You can find the live stats and the live stream on IWUsports.com.
