Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Firebirds

Titans host Carroll Saturday, April 13, for a 12 p.m. start

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Playing its first game inside Tucci Stadium since March 23, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to Carthage College Wednesday night, April 10. With the loss, the Titans drop to 5-7 overall, and 0-2 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while the Firebirds up their record to 8-4 overall, 2-0 in league play.

Junior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) led the Green and White offense with three points by way of two goals and an assist. Sophomore Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) also buried two goals for two points, while senior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) posted a goal and an assist.

Setzler and sophomore Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) each finished with four draw controls, while fellow sophomore Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) added three. Junior Mallory Mills (Schaumburg, Ill.-James B. Conant) scooped up a team-high four ground balls, tying her career-best. Four Titans finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Stepping in goal for the Green and White, sophomore Prissilla Tucker (Santa Rosa, Calif.-Windsor) made six saves in 60 minutes of action.

Setzler opened the game by winning the opening draw, setting up the IWU offense. Maldonado found Fountain on a cut to crack the scoreboard first, as the Titans took an early 1-0 lead 70 seconds into the game.

After Carthage rattled off the next four goals, Setzler fed Fountain on a break towards the goal, cutting the lead to two with 8.3 seconds remaining in the first quarter of action.

Sophomore Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) forced a turnover near the 50-yard line and quickly scooped up the ground ball and found Newton. After catching the pass, Newton raced downfield and fired a breakaway shot, which bounced off the Carthage goalie and into the stick of Setzler, who buried the rebound to make it a one goal game with 10:26 left to play in the first half.

Continuing her strong half, Setzler scored her second goal of the game, combatting a Carthage goal to keep the game within one, 5-4. The Firebirds scored twice more to take a 7-4 advantage into halftime.

After forcing a caused turnover to open the second half, Maldonado capitalized on the Firebird miscue to notch her first goal of the game to bring the lead back within two just over a minute into the third quarter.

Carthage scored their four other goals in the third quarter, and ran away with the 16-5 win.
