Titans Clip Cardinals, 16-10

IWU moves to 2-0 in CCIW play

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team defeated North Central College 16-10, Wednesday evening, April 10, inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The Titans move to 8-3 on the season with an unblemished 2-0 start to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play after handing NCC its first loss in league action (8-2, 0-1 CCIW).

The Titans continue their undefeated streak against NCC, now owning a 7-0 series record.

The IWU quartet of seniors Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) and Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View), junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill-Oak Park River Forest), and freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) shared the team-high of four points apiece. Weinberg set new career highs in both points and goals (4), while sophomore Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) had the second-most points with three to tie his career high. McHugh led all Titans with four assists while senior Zo Lombardo (Elgin, Ill.-Saint Viator) was 12-for-25 at the X, picked up the team-high seven ground balls, and scored one goal. Junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) served all 60 minutes between the pipes, totaling 21 saves to surpass his previous career high, and was good for a .677 clip.

The opening quarter saw IWU strike first, as Seeley found Dretzka for a goal four minutes into the game. Dretzka came back for another shot just 40 seconds later to move IWU ahead 2-0. North Central managed three goals to close out the opening quarter up 3-2.

Black went to work for an unassisted goal to nab the equalizer with 12:45 left to play in the half. Weinberg got the go-ahead goal after camping out just outside the crease before replicating the shot 15 seconds later to increase the Titan lead to 5-3. Tervo snagged a clutch save before sending the ball long for IWU's quick transition offense that saw junior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) dish to senior Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) in front of the net for his first goal of the game. NCC put away a goal before the end of the half to cut the Green and White lead to 6-4.

Following the break, IWU and NCC traded goals but it was Weinberg who secured the hat trick, thanks to an assist by Black, to maintain the 7-5 advantage. Utilizing nearly every second of the possession, Black muscled through four defenders to fire away another goal. IWU continued to outscore NCC 3-2 through the remainder of the quarter as Black, Eastburn, and junior Nick Horrocks (Boulder, Colo.-Fairview) each picked up goals to lead 11-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Lombardo took matters into his own hands on the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter with the pickup before dropping defenders on his way to the net, scoring his second goal of the season and moving IWU up, 12-8. From behind the net, McHugh facilitated a goal for Weinberg before Seeley put away the first of two unassisted goals in the fourth quarter. Eastburn would also net an unassisted goal to help IWU to a 16-10 victory over the Cardinals.

IWU is back on the road Saturday, April 13 as the Titans take a trip north to Kenosha, Wis. for another CCIW bout, this time with Carthage College.
