Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Carroll

Titans ready for midweek matchup with Elmhurst

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team completed the three-game series sweep of Carroll University Saturday, March 30, as IWU won both ends of a doubleheader at Horenberger Field. The Titans grabbed a 3-0 win in game one, before using a comeback to complete the sweep, 7-6. IWU is now 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play whereas Carroll drops to 5-13 overall and 0-3 in the CCIW.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Carroll 0
The game was deadlocked at zero into the fourth, where senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) started off with a single to right field. With a hit from junior Sebastian Edenhofer (Elmhurst, Ill.-York Community) Cyrus advanced to second. Freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) reached on a fielder's choice on the next play getting Cyrus to third in time for sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) to smack one down the right field line to score Cyrus and give IWU a 1-0 lead.

The Titans' defense was something to watch in game one as senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) came up with a diving catch to end the sixth when the Pios were in scoring position. The run-saving play was one of several key defensive efforts made by the Green and White.

IWU got things rolling in the bottom of the seventh starting with senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) singling up the middle. Junior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) was right behind him placing the ball in the same spot and advancing Biggers to third. Perona was walked and bases were loaded with junior Justin Gadmoski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) up to bat. Gadomski hit a sacrifice fly to center field advancing Duff to third and bringing Biggers home. The Green and White ended the inning with a wild pitch to run Duff in before pulling away with the 3-0 win.

Starting on the bump was junior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield), who pitched seven innings with five strikeouts and four hits. Sophomore Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) closed the game, earning the save, with one strikeout over two innings.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 7, Carroll 6 (10 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan manufactured three runs in its first trip to the plate in the series finale to take an early lead. A two-bagger from Perona to left center was followed by a walk from Gadomski. Sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) kept IWU rolling with another double to left center, scoring two to push IWU ahead. With Flagg on third, sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) singled down the right line running in Flagg to end the inning, 3-0 in favor of the home team.

The Titans let up two in the top of the third to give the Pioneers their first runs of the day. The Green and White did not let up though, scoring one more in the bottom of the third with Gadomski running in from second base taking the lead, 4-2.

The Pios fought their way back from the deficit and took their first lead of the series, scoring three to claim a 5-4 lead into the seventh-inning stretch.

IWU bounced back though, scoring one in the seventh as Gadomski doubled down the left line to bring pinch-runner, senior Michael Passarelli (Chicago, Ill.-De La Salle) in, tying it up 5-5.

CU retook the lead in the top of the ninth, but a clutch ninth by Illinois Wesleyan forced extras. After reaching with a one-out single, Perona swiped second and then advanced to third on an interference call. With Perona standing on third, Gadomski pushed a sacrifice fly to right to even the score, 6-6.

Feeding off a 1-2-3 10th inning from junior Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) in relief, that featured two strikeouts, IWU got right to work.

Flagg started the bottom of the 10th off with a monster hit, just short of out of the park, into left center to his second two-bagger of the game. A fielder's choice and a walk quickly loaded the bases with nobody out, before Duff walked off the sweep with a single up the middle. The RBI knock gave IWU the 7-6 win and completed the sweep of the three-game series.

Sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) threw seven innings with eight strikeouts in a no-decision, while Schwab threw three scoreless innings to secure the win on the mound.

The Titans continue CCIW play with a midweek clash at Elmhurst University. Game is slated for Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
