Baseball Falls to Elmhurst in Extra Innings

IWU heads to North Central for twin bill Saturday, April 6

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to Elmhurst University as the Titans battled the Bluejays into 10 innings Friday evening, April 5 at Horenberger Field.

IWU moves to a 13-8 (3-2 CCIW) record on the year while Elmhurst climbs to 6-14 (2-2 CCIW). Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) and William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) led the team with a pair of hits each while Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech), Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), and Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) each had one. Woltman notched the team's sole RBI and Duff had the team's only two-bagger on the day.

Six Titans made appearances on the mound with Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) putting in six innings of work for nine strikeouts. Alex Smith (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) pitched two innings and struck out three batters along the way. Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) was hit with the loss, moving to a 1-2 pitching record on the year.

After five uneventful innings, the Illinois Wesleyan bats got moving in the sixth as Perona split the outfielders in left-center before Gadomski used a single to left field to advance Perona to second. Cyrus laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Perona in scoring position, just in time for Woltman to notch an RBI on a groundout to shortstop, putting IWU in the lead 1-0.

The Bluejays quickly answered back with a run in the top of the seventh to level the board at 1-all.

Woltman and Flagg each had base hits in the eighth inning but would eventually be left stranded alongside Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), who was walked earlier in the inning.

The Titans would turn in a 1-2-3 top of the ninth before Duff singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a Perona sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, Duff was left on base as the Titans and Bluejays entered extra innings knotted, 1-1.

Elmhurst pulled ahead in the top of the 10th with a solo home run, and despite getting a pair of Titans on base thanks to a Bluejay error and a walk, the Titans succumbed to a 2-1 deficit.

IWU travels to Naperville, Ill. Saturday, April 6 for the opening two games of a three-game series with North Central College. Game times at Zimmerman Stadium are set for noon and 3 p.m.
