Baseball Run-Rules Pios in Series Opener

Doubleheader set for tomorrow, March 30

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team kicked off a three-game College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series against Carroll University with a 12-2 run-rule win Friday afternoon, March 29, at Horenberger Field. IWU boosts its record to 11-7 overall and now sits level at 1-1 in league play. CU stumbled to 5-11 on the ear and 0-1 in CCIW games.

Sophomore Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before coming away with his third win of the season. He finished with eight strikeouts over seven innings of work, while allowing two hits. Senior Alex Smith (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) tossed a hitless eighth to close out the win.

The Titans finished with 17 hits on the day, including a 4-for-5 showing from sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), who also tied for the team lead with seven runs scored. Junior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) also drove in two.

IWU took an early lead in the bottom of the second with a hot start from freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), who singled to center field. Gurgone bombed a two-bagger to left center advancing Ferraro to third. On a passed ball, Ferraro served as the first run of the game. To extend the lead, Duff singled to right field, scoring Gurgone and ending the second with a 2-0 IWU lead.

Keeping with the hot bats, junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) started off the inning with a single to right field. Ferraro claimed his first two-bagger of the season to earn Gadomski a run. One pitch later, Gurgone doubled to the same spot to get Ferraro home for a 4-0 lead. Senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central), hit a single to right center bringing Gurone home before Duff singled down the right field line running sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) in. To end the inning, Biggers added one more to the board on a wild pitch to bring the score to 7-0.

The Green and White saw a fourth inning home run from Gadomski, his third of the season.

The Pioneers were able to put some numbers on the board in the fifth, capitalizing on a walk, before breaking up the no-no in the sixth inning. Carroll pushed two across to cut the Illinois Wesleyan lead to 8-2 into the bottom of the frame.

To counter the Pios offensive output, Duff and senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) both singled to put the first two aboard. With one out and a pair on, Cyrus singled to left to drive in two to extend IWU's lead to 10-2.

IWU walked off the run-rule victory in the bottom of the eighth, as sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) singled to leadoff the inning. A Gurgone single put runners on the corners for Willard, who drove in Flagg with an RBI single up the middle. With one out and runners on first and third, Biggers lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Gurgone and end the game, 12-2.

The Titans finish the three-game series at home against Carroll University in a double header tomorrow, Saturday, March 30. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and then play its second game at 2 p.m.
