Baseball Falls to Big Blue in CCIW Opener

Carroll up next

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan Unviersity baseball team played its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game this Wednesday, March 27 against Millikin University. The Titans were bested by the Big Blue, 5-3, dipping their record to 10-7 overall and 0-1 in conference whereas, Millikin is now 10-9 overall and 1-0 in league.

Scoreless into the third, IWU was the first to score as senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) cranked one straight to over the right field fence. The solo homer, the first of Biggers' career, pushed the Titans ahead, 1-0. With senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) on base with a walk, junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) slapped one to right field, getting Perona to third to set the table for senior Jacob Cyrus' (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) RBI single,.

Senior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) poked a two-bagger to start the fourth off, putting Illinois Wesleyan in position to tack on another run. Once again, Biggers came through in an RBI situation, scoring Hutson to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the Titans.

The Titans have the Big Blue bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth, as IWU saw its lead evaporate. Two hit batters, a walk, an error, and a base hit allowed Millikin to plate three runs and even the score, 3-3, before Cyrus' induced an inning-ending double play.

MU continued its hot streak in the top of the sixth, with two more runs to take a 5-3 lead.

The two-run deficit carried into the ninth, where the Titans put a runner aboard to bring the tying run to the plate, but could not capitalize.

The Titans totaled eight hits and one error while the Big Blue tallied eight hits and no errors. Gadomski was 2-for-4 from the plate today.

Cyrus was the starting pitcher on the bump and was credited with the loss bringing his record to 1-1, he threw for 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.

IWU hosts Carroll University this weekend, March 29-30. The series begins with a 3 p.m. first pitch Friday, March 29, at Horenberger Field.
