Baseball falls to Wabash to End Three-Game Series

Conference Play up Next

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team finished its three-game series against the Little Giants of Wabash College Sunday, March 24. The Titans split the first two games of the series yesterday but was bested in today's contest by a score of 8-5. The Titans move to 10-6 on the season with the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin slate on deck.

The Green and White struck first as junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) tallied his second home run of the season in his first at-bat of the game. The Little Giants responded though, as they scored in the bottom of the first to make the score even at 1-1 going into the second.

The Titans went scoreless for the next inning, while WC scored two more to bump its lead up to 3-1.

Wabash maintained its two run advantage until the top of the sixth inning, when senior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) singled up the middle. Sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) was next up to bat and, with a new pitcher in, and crushed the ball past the fences to earn a two-run home run and tie the game up at 3 all.

Still in the sixth, with another substiutiton on the mound for Wabash, IWU took advantage of an error on a failed pick off attempt by the Little Giants to bring pinch runner William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) home and take the lead, 4-3.

Wabash did not let up, tallying four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-4.

Staring down a four run Wabash lead, senior Jacob Cryrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) singled up the middle as  a walk from sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) followed. With runners on first and second, Hutson singled up the middle to bring in Cyrus, but the Titan's run would end there, giving the Little Giants a 8-5 victory.

Starting on the bump was sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak, Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), who pitched five innings and produced one strikeout. Shamhart was credited with the loss, his first of the season, bringing his record to 4-1.

IWU starts CCIW play in a quick turn around Tuesday, March 26th. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Jack Horenberger Field against conference foe Millikin University.
