3/22/2024 10:14:00 AM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After Head Coach Dennis Martel's 900th win in Florida, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team is set to play its first two home games of the season Saturday, March 23 at 12 and 3 p.m. IWU will follow with a game at Wabash on Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. ET. The Titans will compete against the Little Giants of Wabash College in a three-game series, two in Bloomington, Ill. and one in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Saturday's home contest will mark the first time in 322 days that the Green and White will play at Horenberger Field. Entering the three-game slate, the Titans own a record of 9-4, while the Little Giants bring their 6-6 record to Bloomington.

In the all-time series between the two programs, Wabash owns a 7-4, advantage dating back to the 2000 campaign. The Titans dropped the initial meeting before rattling off four straight victories from 2000-2014. However, recent history has favored the Little Giants as Wabash swept last year's three-game series on March 27.

Illinois Wesleyan is fresh off the program's spring break trip to Florida where IWU competed in seven games over the week-long trip, March 9-16. The Green and White compiled a record of 5-2, with losses over previously ranked Wheaton College (Mass.) and Ripon College with scores of 18-8, and 4-3, respectively. Over the seven-span, the Titans' offense tallied 70 runs, good for an average of 10 runs per game.

On the flip side, the Little Giants most recently took on Greenville, for a single-game set, March 19. The Panthers took the win after a 10-inning game Tuesday, 7-8.

Currently, junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) leads IWU offensively with a .452 batting average. Woltman has 13 runs along with four RBIs on the season thus far. Not far behind him is junior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) with a batting average of .432 with 10 runs and 11 RBIs. To round out the Titans' top-three, senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) has a .413 batting average with 15 runs and four RBIs. Woltman, Figus, and Perona are all tied at 19 hits for the team-high of this season.

On the bump, sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) has tallied four wins on the season. Shamhart sits third in the conference in pitching with an ERA of 2.95. The Oak Park, Ill. native has 21 strikeouts to his name over 21.1 innings pitched.
