Men’s Tennis Win Streak Snapped by Greenville

Titans fall to Panthers, 6-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team saw its five-game win streak snapped by Greenville University, as the Titans fell, 6-3, on Saturday, March 2. With the loss, Illinois Wesleyan falls to 5-2, while Greenville improves to 4-4. 

Starting the match off in doubles action, the Titans' lone paired victory came at No. 2 doubles, with sophomore Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) utilizing a tiebreaker to win 8-7 (4). 

Illinois Wesleyan picked up wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, but was overpowered by the top of the Panthers lineup. Cross was victorious at No. 5 individuals, winning with set scores 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) got the win at No. 6 singles, using three sets to do so. Hammond took the first set, 7-5, but fell in the second, 6-4. With the last set in play, Hammond bounced back to take a 10-6 decision to secure the individual victory.

IWU returns to action for its spring break trip, as the Titans travel to Orlando, Fla., for four matches Monday-Thursday, March 11-14.
