Men’s Lacrosse Slays Spartans

Titans even record at 2-2 heading into spring break trip

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team used a second-quarter spark to defeat Aurora University, 24-15, at Tucci Stadium Saturday afternoon, March 2. With the win, IWU boosted its record to 2-2, while AU sits at 1-2.

Freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) tied for a match-high six points with a pair of goals and four assists. Senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) was second with five points, while sophomore Andrew Ortega (Austin, Texas-Westlake) and junior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) each posted four.

At the x, senior Zo Lombardo (Elgin, Ill.-Saint Viator) put on a dominant performance, winning 22 of his 30 faceoffs, and sophomore Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) added a nine-for-12 performance.

Seeley tied his career-high with seven ground balls to lead the Green and White. Rocco and Lombardo each scooped up six, while junior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) added five. A trio of Titans finished with two caused turnovers to help propel the defense.

Junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) notched the win in goal for the Titans, as he posted three saves in 30 minutes between the iron, evening his record to 2-2 on the season. Senior Alex Oximana (Seattle, Wash.-Bishop Blanchet) added three saves with 20:15 minutes logged between the posts.

Illinois Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the board as Ortego found McHugh for a goal just 21 seconds into the game.

Aurora came back with three straight goals though, before Seeley connected with Eastburn for a goal to break up the run midway through the period. The Titans scored one again about two minutes later, with McHugh finding Kittoe for a man-up goal with 5:26 on the clock to level the score at three.

Goals by Ortega, Gammelgaard, and Black pushed IWU ahead, 6-4, but AU found the back of the net to cut the Titan lead to one, 6-5, into the second quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan cranked out 10 goals over the next 15 minutes of play. Seeley ran through a defender to score the quarter first run to get the Titans rolling. Black and Weinberg buried man-up goals on assists from McHugh and Eastburn, before McHugh drove the lead to 10-6 with 6:29 remaining in the half.

Aurora scored off the ensuing faceoff, but the Green and White scored six straight goals over the final five and a half minutes to carry a 16-7 advantage into halftime. The run featured three goals in less than 50 seconds, beginning with a score from Gisi. Seeley followed with a diving shot into the back of the net and tacked on another goal after a win at the X by Lombardo.

Illinois Wesleyan showed no signs of slowing down in the second half as the Titans finished off the 24-15 win.

Illinois Wesleyan enjoys an extended break before returning to action at Colorado College over spring break. There, IWU will tangle with SUNY Cortland Wednesday, March 13, before battling CC Saturday, March 16. Game times are set for 3 p.m. MT and 11 a.m. MT, respectively.
