COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team opened its two-game spring break trip with a 12-9 loss to State University of New York-Cortland Wednesday, March 13. IWU falls to a 2-3 record on the year while Cortland is now 3-1.

Freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) tied with senior Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) for a team-high four points. McHugh dished out three assists and a goal while Black's four points all came from goals. Senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) had three points, while juniors John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) and Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) and senior Ethan Hart (Littleton, Colo.-J.K. Mullen) each posted one.

At the x, senior Zo Lombardo (Elgin, Ill.-Saint Viator) won 18 of his 23 faceoffs, and sophomore Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) went 1-for-1.

Black had the most ground balls for the Green and White with four, while a quartet of Titans tied for second-most with two apiece.

Junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) falls to 2-3 on the season in goal. He notched 15 saves.

Despite getting on the board first with a man-up goal by Black thanks to a dish from McHugh, Cortland managed to take the 2-1 lead with back-to-back goals to close out the opening period.

Looking to bounce back quickly in the second, Black ripped an unassisted goal to level the score just one minute into the period. The Green and White defense kept the Red Dragons scoreless through six minutes of play but Cortland would eventually regain a 5-2 lead headed into halftime.

The third period saw Cortland extend its lead early on with two straight goals, before Seeley scored to narrow the lead at 7-3. Seeley went to work drawing the Red Dragon defense out before setting up McHugh for the Titans' second goal in a two-minute span. With just over three minutes left in the period, McHugh connected with Black to take an outside shot, bringing the score within two. Taking advantage of a Cortland penalty, Black and Hart would net two additional man-up goals just 20 seconds apart to level the score at 7-all. The Red Dragons snuck in a goal just before the period's end to regain the 8-7 advantage.

Quick ball movement saw Kittoe connect with Weinberg for a goal at the 13:17 minute mark to bring the score even once again. Cortland scored three more times before Seeley could deliver an unassisted goal to keep the score within two at 11-9 in favor of the Red Dragons with just under eight minutes left. The Titan defense held Cortland to one additional goal in the final minutes of play, ultimately falling to the Red Dragons, 12-9.
