White Breaks Steals Record As Women’s Hoops Wallops Elmhurst

Titans maintain top spot in the CCIW

ELMHURST, Ill. - The 13th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team picked up a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin road win against Elmhurst University, 99-65, on Wednesday night, Feb. 7 inside R.A. Faganel Hall. The Titans improve to 18-4 on the season, including a conference-best 11-2 mark in CCIW play. With the loss, Elmhurst snapped its four game win streak, dropping to 11-12 on the season and 5-9 in conference action.

In a balanced offensive attack, the Titans saw four players score in double digits. Junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) finished with a team-high 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) added 16 points, and a team-best six rebounds. Off the bench, sophomore Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) added 13 points in just 14 minutes of action.

Sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove-Montini Catholic) dropped 11 points and five steals. With the five steals, White now holds the Illinois Wesleyan school record for steals in a single season with 92 on the year, breaking Rebekah Ehresman's record of 90 set in the 2017-18 season. Junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) also led the team with four assists.

The opening minutes of the game saw a back-and-forth affair, before a White layup and a Mahlum three pointer gave the Titans a 12-7 lead with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter. In the final minute of the opening period, buckets by Catie Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and Huber gave the Green and White an 18-10 advantage heading into the second quarter.

In true Illinois Wesleyan fashion, the Titans broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Bluejays 25-14 in the second period. Knutson scored seven of her nine points, including five straight, in the second quarter to give the Titans a 43-24 lead heading into the break.

Elmhurst cut the Titan lead to as few as 12 in the third quarter, but the Green and White closed out the period strong and maintained its 19 point advantage, 68-49.

Illinois Wesleyan saved its best offensive quarter for last, scoring 31 points in the final 10 minutes. Six points from senior Launi Chanthaboury (St Charles, Ill.-St Charles North), including a 2-of-2 mark from deep, propelled the Titans to a 57.9 percent shooting effort from the floor in the fourth quarter as the Titans fell one point short of the century mark, defeating Elmhurst 99-65.

Illinois Wesleyan stays on the road to take on Carthage College on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Tarble Arena and will serve as the front half of a doubleheader with the Titan men's squad.
