Historic Three-Point Shooting Highlights Women’s Hoops Win at Carthage

Titans post best three-point shooting mark since 2012

KENOSHA, Wis. - The No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team overwhelmed Carthage College in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, 93-66, Saturday, Feb. 10, at Tarble Arena. The Titans improve to 19-4 on the season and a league-best 12-2 mark in CCIW play. The Firebirds drop to 11-12 on the year and 4-10 in league play.

Six Titans hit double figures, led by junior Mallory Powers' (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) team-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She also tied for the team lead with three steals. Junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) scored 15 points, with three three-pointers, and sophomore Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) net 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Bardic finished 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) went for 11 points and a team-high five rebounds, while sophomore Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) and junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) scored 10 points apiece.

Illinois Wesleyan posted a 58.1 field goal percentage and finished even better from distance. The Titans hit 14-of-24 three-pointers, good for a 58.3 clip, both of which rank among the top performances in program history. IWU's 14 made threes were the most since March 18, 2011 against WashU. Meanwhile, the 58.3 percent clip ranks as the second-highest all-time and is the best since the record (70.6) was established at North Park Jan. 7, 2012.

Carthage corralled a slim 32-31 lead in rebounding, along with a 15-10 edge in second chance scoring. Illinois Wesleyan dominated in transition, 23-0, and also held advantages in bench scoring (30-24) and points in the paint (42-38). The Titans manufactured a 32-11 lead in points off turnovers as the Green and White won the turnover battle, 21-14.

The Firebirds were red-hot offensively to begin the game, hitting six of their first seven shots. Knutson found sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) for a corner three to give IWU a 14-12 edge at the five-minute mark.

After Carthage evened the score, an and-one from Huber started an eight-point run for Illinois Wesleyan. The spurt was capped off by a layup from Knutson, pushing the Titans ahead by eight, 22-14, with 1:45 left in the frame.

CC scored the final four points off the period to cut IWU's lead in half, 24-20, after 10 minutes of action.

Illinois Wesleyan's season-long dominance in the second quarter continued as the Green and White outscored the Firebirds, 33-13, over the 10-minute period. A Powers steal turned into a White bucket to stretch the lead to double digits, 34-23, before the Titans closed the half on a 19-4 run. The swing featured four three-pointers from Bardic on two assists by White and a dime from senior Launi Chanthaboury (St Charles, Ill.-St Charles North) in the span of two and a half minutes.

Carthage hit a jumper at the buzzer to give IWU a 57-33 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Titans stretched their lead to as many as 36. Senior Megan Moody (Gibson City, Ill.-Gibson City, Ill./Melvin-Sibley) drained a three-ball on an assist from sophomore Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) to close out the third quarter, 84-48, before taking home the victory.

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up the regular season with a two-game homestand beginning Wednesday, Feb. 14, against North Park University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
