Women’s Hoops Earns 20th Win of the Year with Rout of North Park

Thirteen Titans score in the win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 13th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team overpowered North Park University, 86-46, Wednesday night, Feb. 14, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (20-4, 13-2 CCIW) saw 13 players score in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win over the Vikings (4-20, 1-14).

Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) led the way with a game-high 18 points and paced IWU with seven rebounds. Junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) went for 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) finished with 14 points and a pair of blocks. Freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) scored a career-high five points.

The Titans finished just shy of 50 percent from the floor, going 29-for-59 overall, good for a 49.2 percent clip. IWU hit 7-of-21 three-point tries and went 5-for-8 at the free throw line. The Vikings were stymied to a field goal percentage of 31.0, and went 5-for-21 from beyond the arc. NPU made 26 trips to the charity stripe, converting 21 of them.

Illinois Wesleyan forced 25 turnovers, while committing 12, which led to a 31-9 stronghold for the Green and White in points off miscues. IWU also held leads in points in the paint (40-24), second chance scoring (13-8), fastbreak scoring (13-4), and bench scoring (40-9). The Titans doubled up the Vikings in assists, 18-9, and recorded 17 steals and four blocks in a dominant defensive showing.

North Park held a small advantage early on, but once Illinois Wesleyan found its stride the Titans grabbed control. After a three-pointer by Victoria Perry gave NPU an 11-7 lead, the Vikings' largest of the night, the Titans rattled off a 27-point run that spanned more than seven minutes. Following a free throw from junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), Knutson scored seven unanswered points to push IWU ahead, 15-11, with 3:39 to go in the opening period.

The Green and White showed no signs of slowing down as the daunting run-and-jump press caused the Vikings fits. Illinois Wesleyan forced nine North Park turnovers in the final 3:30 of the period to roll ahead, 31-11, after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, Huber kicked things off with an and-one to cap the 27-point run before the Titans took a 59-24 lead into halftime.

The final 20 minutes of play saw buckets by freshman Ellie Cahil (Goodfield, Ill.-Eureka), senior Emma Kornak (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), and sophomore Payton Jacob (St. Joseph, Ill.-St. Joseph Ogden) as IWU ran away with the 86-46 win.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out the regular season at home Saturday, Feb. 17, with a Senior Day bout against North Central College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the IWU men's basketball team. The Titans will recognize seniors Launi Chanthaboury, Megan Moody, Taylor Tarver, and Emma Kornak pregame.
