Men’s Tennis Splits Matches in First Contest of Spring

IWU starts the season 1-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team split their triangular meet on Saturday, Feb. 3 with Division I Eastern Illinois University and Lawrence University at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington. The Titans (4-2) swept Lawrence (0-2), 9-0, in their afternoon contest after falling to Eastern Illinois (1-3), 0-7, in the morning session.

Against Eastern Illinois, the Titans saw sophomore Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) put up a fight at No. 2 singles, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4,to Pau Riera. In paired action sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) dropped their battle at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

The Titans dominated the afternoon, sweeping Lawrence, 9-0, for their first win of the spring season. Turnbell made quick work at No. 1 singles, winning both of his sets 6-2 and 6-1. Freshman Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) picked up the first win of his college career at No. 4 singles, 6-4 and 6-0.

Vigneri won his match at No. 2 singles with set scores 6-0, 6-3, and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) was victorious at No. 5 singles, winning his sets 6-2, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. The Titans swept the Blus in doubles en route to a shutout victory.

The Titans are back in action again on Saturday, Feb. 17 for a triangular meet with Monmouth College and Principia College. The first matches with Monmouth are scheduled for an 8:45 a.m. start, while matches with Principia are set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
