Softball Spurned in Extras

Titans fall, 3-1, to No. 12 Belhaven

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team was bested by No. 12 Belhaven University in extra innings at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Thursday night, Feb. 29.

Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) threw seven scoreless innings to keep the Blazers at bay and send the game to extras.

Belhaven broke through in the eighth though, scoring three runs on two hits and an error to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame with freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) on second, fellow freshman JD Dowling (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park) beat out an infield single. Down to their final out, the Titans cracked the scoring column on a RBI from junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia). Trailing 3-1 with the game-winning run at the plate, a fly out ended the rally, as IWU fell, 3-1.

Certa struck out eight over eight innings, with eight hits allowed. She surrendered three runs, only one of which was earned.

At the plate, Milgazo and Dowling paced the Titan offense that finished with seven hits. Milgazo, IWU's leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dowling finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) tallied Illinois Wesleyan's lone extra-base hit, a triple, in a 1-for-4 showing.

The Green and White return to action tomorrow, March 1, with an altered schedule. Instead of playing the previously scheduled two games, IWU will play a lone game against University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5 p.m. ET on field 5.
