Softball Faces Tripleheader at NFCA Leadoff Classic

Titans to play Wartburg and No. 3 Berry tomorrow, March 3

COLUMBUS, Ga. - After a day full of rainouts, the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team played three games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday, March 2, in Columbus, Ga. The Titans dropped a pair of games to top-10 opponents in No. 8 Christopher Newport University and sixth-ranked Moravian University, but shutout Chapman University to improve to 2-4 on the year.

Game One: No. 8 Christopher Newport 12, Illinois Wesleyan 0
The Titans trailed 1-0 into the bottom of the fourth, where sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) singled to leadoff the frame before being caught stealing.

CNU tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to open up a 6-0 advantage.

IWU put a baserunner aboard, as senior Maya Black (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, but a double play kept anything from materializing.

The Captains pounced for six runs on four hits in the seventh to take the game, 12-0.

Wissmiller, junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High), and freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) accounted for Illinois Wesleyan's three hits, while Christopher Newport tallied 13.

In the circle, sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) was hit with the loss. She went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Chapman 0
The Green and White bounced back in its second game of the day, using eight hits to clip Chapman.

Sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) was impressive in the circle, throwing seven scoreless innings with seven Ks. She allowed just five hits and did not surrender a free pass.

Three Titans collected multi-hit games in the bout. Milgazo went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Kuhn and senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) each went 2-for-3. Wissmiller was credited with two RBIs in a 1-for-4 showing, while junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) brought in a run as well.

With the game scoreless into the fourth, Kuhn belted a ground-rule double to lead off the frame. A well-executed sacrifice bunt from freshman Elyssa Stenger (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) moved Kuhn to third, where Khoury's sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the game.

After a 1-2-3 fourth by Certa which included an inning-ending strikeout, Illinois Wesleyan expanded its lead. The Titans used four hits to manufacture two runs and push ahead, 3-0. A one-out single from Turner was followed by a bunt single by the speedy Milgazo as the lineup turned over to the top. With two in scoring position, Wissmiller roped a single to left to drive in two.

Certa took it from there, working around a few baserunners, including one that was caught stealing by Stenger. The sophomore hurler capped her strong outing in the seventh as she finished off the 3-0 victory with back-to-back strikeouts.

Game Three: Illinois Wesleyan 2, No. 6 Moravian 5
Moravian scored once in the first and twice in both the second and third innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

The score stood into the sixth, where Wissmiller belted a two-run homer to cut the deficit to three, 5-2, but that was all the Titans could muster in the setback.

The Green and White used two arms in the circle, with Turner getting the start. Freshman Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) was sound in relief, throwing the final four innings. She allowed one run on two hits.

Offensively, IWU's three hits were spread evenly across a trio of players. Freshman JD Dowling (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park), Wissmiller, and Kuhn each went 1-for-3 in the game. Wissmiller's homer boosted her team-leading RBI total to six on the season.

The Titans return to South Commons Complex for two games Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. game against Wartburg College before taking on No. 3 Berry at 11:30 a.m.
