Men’s Tennis Sweeps Monmouth and Principia

Titans sweep Scots, win hard-fought battle with Panthers

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team swept a pair of duels on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 17, at the Evergreen Racquet Club. The Titans swept their morning match, 9-0, versus Monmouth before winning a tight one, 5-4 over Principia in the afternoon. Illinois Wesleyan climbs to 3-1 on the season, while Monmouth drops to 0-5 on the year and Principia holds steady at 2-2.

The Titans handedly took care of Monmouth in the first match, winning 9-0. The afternoon match was a different story against Principia. Sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) made quick work at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) and sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) won the tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to earn the Green and White a point.

In singles versus Principia, Turnbull won a hard fought match 4-6, 6-0, 10-6. Additionally, at No. 4 singles, after dropping his first set, Dillow was a winner in the proceeding two, 6-3, 12-10. Hammond would go on to win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to close out a 5-4 Titan win over the Panthers.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to the courts next Friday, Feb. 23 for a duel against Webster. Games will be held at Evergreen Racquet Club, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. Results will be posted after the conclusion of the event on iwusports.com.
