Titans Fall in Season Opener

Eye bounce back Saturday, Feb. 24, against Sewanee

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team started off its 2024 regular season campaign against the Flying Dutch of Hope College. The Titans dropped the bout, 15-8, to slip to 0-1 on the season.

Senior Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) led the Titans with two goals, while junior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) and senior Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) tallied one goal and one assist to finish with two points each.

Juniors Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) made 12 stops in net, while Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) scooped up a team-high eight ground balls. Schroeder finished 13-for-21 at the X with one caused turnover. Senior Michael Campagna (Arlington Heights, Ill.-St. Viator) forced a team-best three caused turnovers, while sophomores Kaden Gammelgard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) and Kade Miers (Cincinnati, Ohio-St. Xavier) added two apiece.

It was a game of runs after Eastburn opened the scoring on an assist from freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) just 1:15 into the contest. Hope responded with three straight goals before Kittoe and Campagna leveled the score at 3-3 after the first period.

After an even second quarter saw the game knotted at five at the break, the Flying Dutch scored the first two goals of the third period to take a 7-5 lead.

Senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) trimmed the deficit to one with 10:23 on the clock, but Hope rattled off six goals over a 18-minute span to grab control, 14-7.

Eastburn found the back of the net once more, around the 2:30 mark, but it was too late as the Green and White fell, 15-8.

The Titans travel to Louisville, Ky. Saturday, Feb. 24, for a neutral site game against Sewanee. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
