Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Sewanee

Home opener on deck for Titans Wednesday, Feb. 28

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team was downed by the Sewanee: The University of the South Tigers 13-12, Saturday, Feb, 24 in a neutral site match in Louisville, Ky. The Titans move to 0-2 on the season while Sewanee jumps to 4-0. 

Junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) led the Green and White with four goals while seniors Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) and Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) totaled two and three goals, respectively. Black and sophomore Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) shared a team-lead three assists apiece. Sophomore Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and senior Ethan Hart (Littleton, Colo.-J.K. Mullen) picked up five ground balls each. Junior goalkeeper Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) accrued 15 stops in the net on a .536 clip. 

Senior Jayden Erie (Duluth, Minn.-Denfeld) and Eastburn notched the opening two goals of the match before Black added another with just under 10 minutes left in the first period. Sewanee leveled the score at 3-3 before taking the lead to end the first period ahead 7-5. 

The second period opened with the Green and White playing a man up, as Weinberg anchored a five-goal run for the Titans with a hat trick to go along with goals by Eastburn and Black, putting IWU up 10-7. 

The Titans and Tigers traded goals in the third period with IWU remaining ahead 11-10, thanks to a goal by freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) off a dish from sophomore Andrew Ortega (Austin, Texas-Westlake). Sewanee found its footing in the final period to steal the 13-12 win.

IWU will take the field inside Tucci Stadium for the first time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for a nonconference match against Benedictine University at 7 p.m.
