Men’s Hoops Edges Carroll in Waukesha

Three Titans score in double figures

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The fifth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team bounced back with a 72-66 win at Carroll University Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, inside Van Male Fieldhouse. The win bumped the Titans' record to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Pios dipped to 2-6 (0-2 CCIW).

A total of 10 Titans contributed points in the win, with three going for double digits. Senior Nick Roper (St. Louis, Mo.-MICDS) scored a team-high 14 points with eight boards, while seniors Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) and Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) posted near double-doubles. Williams went for 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Wilmsen notched 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore Mason Funk (Normal, Ill.-University High) and senior Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) scored nine points apiece.

Illinois Wesleyan shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-for-54) and went 5-of-19 from three-point range. The Titans connected on 21-of-29 free throw tries and dominated the boards, 51-32. Carroll went 22-for-64 from the field, 34.4 percent, and 8-of-27 from distance (29.6 percent). CU converted 14-of-22 at the charity stripe.

The Titans corralled leads in bench scoring (25-21) and points in the paint (30-24), while the Pioneers led in points off turnovers (20-15), second chance scoring (14-7), and fastbreak scoring (14-10).

The Titans found themselves trailing by six, 59-53, with eight minutes to play. Wilmsen broke a three-minute IWU scoring drought with a layup on a shifty pass from Hakim Williams. After a pair of free throws by Funk, freshman Josh Fridman (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) hit Bazzell for a triple to cut the deficit to one, 61-60, with 5:39 on the clock.

Fridman and Funk turned up the defensive pressure, forcing a timely Carroll miscue, as Fridman dove on the loose ball and called a timeout. Roper hit a layup out of the reset to reclaim an Illinois Wesleyan lead, 62-61, with just under five minutes to play.

Funk fed Bazzell for a jumper to stretch the lead to three, but it was short lived as Carroll tied the game with a three-ball, 64-64, with 2:29 remaining.

Illinois Wesleyan reclaimed the lead, 66-64, on Funk's layup off a dime from senior Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) at the 1:25 mark. The bucket proved to be the start of a six-point run that pushed the Titans ahead for good en route to the 72-66 win.

The Titans take an extended break for final exams before hosting Elmhurst University next Sunday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
