Men’s Soccer Advances to CCIW Semifinals in PKs

Kennedy saw last PK to push Titans through

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer saw a tie in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament quarterfinals but ultimately advanced by penalty kicks, 4-3, against Carroll University, Saturday, Nov. 2. The Titans are now 9-4-4 while the Pioneers end their season at 9-4-5.

The Titans and the Pioneers saw an even playing field in the first half, as IWU took three corners to CU's zero, but Carroll took two shots to Illinois Wesleyan's none. Junior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) saw 45 minutes between the pipes, but had to do little work in the time as none of Carroll's shots were on target.

The second half saw the Titans find the back of the net within the first two mintues of play to crack the scoreboard first. Freshman Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) stole the ball at midfield and dribbled down the field to take a shot from 30 yards out for IWU to lead 1-nil.

Less than 10 minutes later, Carroll was able to score the equalizer to tie the game up at 1-1.

Senior Treyson Bixby (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) saw a scoring opportunity off of a corner kick, but the CU goalie got his fingers on it to make the save.

The Pioneers were able to keep the ball on the attacking side for the majority of the second half taking 10 more shots, but the game remained tied at the end of regulation.

The first overtime saw both teams scoreless, forcing another round of extra time. Illinois Wesleyan saw an opportunity in the second overtime with a give-and-go play from Lyons to junior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), but a Pioneer defender blocked the shot to keep the clock running..

No goals were seen in the second overtime, sending the match into penalty kicks. The Titans saw the same situation just a year prior, and are no stranger to the high pressure. Senior Devyn Kennedy (Earlville, Ill.-Earlville Jr./Sr.) was the final Titan to take a penalty kick, as he found the back of the net to advance IWU to the semifinals.

The Titans see their season extend into the CCIW Semifinals match, as they head to Chicago, Ill. Wednesday, Nov. 6 to take on second-seed North Park.
