Men’s Soccer Ends Season in the CCIW Tournament Semis

Titans finish season 9-5-4

CHICAGO – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team completed its season with a loss to No. 9 North Park University  in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 6. North Park (13-1-5) took a 4-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan (9-5-4) to advance to the CCIW Championships, Saturday, Nov. 9.

An early red card left the Titans playing a man down for nearly 87 minutes. Despite the advantage for NPU, Illinois Wesleyan held the Vikings scoreless into the 19th minute. Gaining possession near midfield, North Park ran the ball down the wing before cutting in and playing a ball through a seam to the feet of Eikeland Bastian. Corralling the ball in stride, Bastian booted it inside the far post to push North Park ahead, 1-nil.

NPU found itself in good scoring position for a second time, but was met by senior captain Will McNulty (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) who blocked the shot in the 35th minute of the game to keep the deficit at one.

Facing a tall task, the Titans did not waver as the goal stood as the lone shot on goal by NPU in the first 45 minutes of play. At the break, North Park held an 11-4 lead in shots and a 4-0 edge in corners.

NPU added three goals in the second half to knock IWU out of the CCIW Tournament with a 4-0 loss in the semifinal round.

Junior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) made one save in net.

Illinois Wesleyan completed the season with a 9-5-4 record. The match marked the final in the careers of Treyson Bixby, Justin Bruso, Mush Bakirdan, Devyn Kennedy, Declan Nugent, Will McNulty, and Logan Shumaker.
