Men’s Hoops Tops UW-Stout

Webster Gorlock Tournament up next for IWU

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The No. 16 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team came away with a 69-57 victory in its midday game against University of Wisconsin-Stout Saturday, Nov. 16. The win extends the Titans' record to 3-0 while UW-Stout dips to 0-4 on the year.

Senior Nick Roper (St. Louis, Mo.-MICDS) led the offensive front for the Green and White, posting 23 points, 13 of which came in the first half, on 7-of-11 shooting. Senior Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) was good for nine points, including a dunk, while seniors Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Pairie Central) and Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) had eight apiece.

Sophomore Mason Funk (Normal, Ill.-University High) led the team with nine rebounds, while Anderson came away with seven.

IWU opened Saturday's game hitting 54.2 percent of its shots from the floor in the opening half but a weaker second half dipped its overall shooting percentage to 36.8 percent for the game.  The Titans were 4-of-15 from distance and 23-of-34 at the charity stripe. The Green and White held UW-Stout to 26.2 percent from the field and 3-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Blue Devils accrued 20 of their 57 points at the free throw line, shooting 90.9 percent.

An evenly matched effort on rebounds saw the Blue Devils with a slim 46-45 advantage in boards.

Williams put away a pair of free throws before Funk drained a three and a Roper dunk gave IWU an early 9-5 lead.

Four straight free throws by Roper and freshman Josh Fridman (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) pushed the Titans ahead 21-10 with just under 11 minutes left to play in the opening half. IWU strung together four straight baskets in the final three minutes to carry a 40-27 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils came out firing in the second half, bringing the score within nine before Funk rattled off back-to-back layups and Bazzell drilled one from beyond the arc to lead 50-33.

With under three minutes left to play, UW-Stout went to work to bring the score back within 10 at 67-57. Sophomore Jackson Niego (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) added two insurance points from the charity line to cap off IWU's 69-57 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Nov. 22-23 as it heads to the Webster Gorlok Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. The Titans will face Westminster (Mo.) Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on Webster Saturday at 3 p.m.
