Men’s Soccer Downs Thunder

Extends unbeaten streak to 10 matches

WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois University men's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak alive as it ran its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record to 2-0 Wednesday, Oct. 9, with a 2-0 win at Wheaton College. The Titans move to 8-0-2 overall while the Thunder fall to 6-5-1 and 2-1 in CCIW play.

Both teams saw little action in the first half up until the 37th minute of the game where senior Mush Bakridan (Morton, Ill.-Morton) faked out the Wheaton goalie on a free kick with the help of sophomore Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd). Bakirdan put the ball in the upper right for the first goal of the game to give IWU the 1-nil lead.

The 1-0 score remained at the end of the half, despite relatively even play. Wheaton notched six shots to the Titans' five, but with three shots on goal for IWU to WC's one. Junior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) tallied one save at the half.

The Titans challenged a pass backwards and deflected a frantic clearance back towards goal in the 85th minute to build on its lead. The bouncing deflection forced by junior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) took a high bounce over the Wheaton keeper racing back towards goal before hitting the crossbar. The Thunder only temporarily evaded the insurance goal though, as Tierney cleaned up the rebound and volleyed it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

The goal proved timely as Wheaton had several close calls in the minutes leading up to Tierney's key play.

Kedzior came through with two more major saves towards the end of the game to keep the Titans up, 2-nil, and close out the victory.

The Titans stay on the road, Saturday Oct. 12 against ranked No. 16 North Park University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Holmgren Athletic Complex.
