Men’s Soccer Falls to Millikin to Close Regular Season

IWU sees sixth seed in the CCIW tournament

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team took on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Millikin University Wednesday, Oct. 30 in its regular season finale. A last-minute goal gave Millikin the win, 3-2, to move its overall record to 10-5-1 and 4-3-1 in conference. The Titans drop to 9-4-3 overall and finish league play 3-4-1. IWU will be the sixth-seed in the CCIW Tournament.

After fending off the Big Blue opportunity in the early goings, a timely effort from junior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) kept the match scoreless and sent IWU off on the counter.

Senior Logan Shumaker (Decatur, Ill.-Mt. Zion) passed a perfect ball to sophomroe Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), who blasted a shot off the crossbar back into play. In the right place at the right time, freshman Elsworth McIntosh (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Harry D. Jacobs) booted the rebound into the back of the goal for a 1-nil lead in the eighth minute:

Another close call saw a Millikin forward in stride with junior defender Nick McCully (Peoria, Ill.-Richwoods) as he challenged for the ball, allowing Kedzior to snatch it up and thwart the chance.

Trying to extend the lead, the Titans took six more shots going into half but could not further their advantage. Kedzior tallied two saves on the half.

MU  came out hot to start the second half, scoring within the first minute to level the score.

The Titans answered Millikin's goal in the 54th minute of the game with a strike from freshman Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) to put IWU up, 2-1.

Millikin responded with its second goal just four minutes later, in the 59th minute, to once again knot the score, 2-2.

With time ticking down towards a draw, Millikin made the most of one last build up towards goal. The Big Blue capitalized on a breakaway opportunity, netting the game-winner with 37 seconds left to play.

Illinois Wesleyan will turn its attention to the CCIW Tournament and a quarterfinals matchup with third-seeded Carroll University. The sixth-seeded Titans will take on the Pioneers in Waukesha, Wis. with a 4 p.m. start time.
