Late PK Grants Men’s Soccer 1-1 Tie with Elmhurst

IWU moves to 9-1-3, and 3-1-1 in CCIW action

ELMHURST, Ill. – A successful 87th minute penalty kick by sophomore Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) saved the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team from an ill fate as the Titans managed to tie the Elmhurst University Bluejays 1-1 Saturday evening, Oct. 19. IWU moves to 9-1-3 and 3-1-1 in CCIW play while Elmhurst picks up its first tie in league play, and holds a record of 5-8-3 and 0-5-1 in conference.

Illinois Wesleyan dominated the possession taking 24 shots to Elmhurst's six. The Titans held the advantage in shots on goal, 9-3, and corner kicks, 4-2, while Elmhurst led with eight saves to junior Sam Kedzior's (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) two.

The first 45 minutes of play remained scoreless despite IWU leading 10-3 in shots, but were unable to execute on the opportunities.

In the 61st minute, senior Mush Bakirdan (Morton, Ill.-Morton) sent a long shot towards the net but the ball was deflected by the Bluejay keeper. Senior Devyn Kennedy (Earlville, Ill.-Earlville Jr./Sr.) was there for the put back but a collision with an Elmhurst defender resulted in a red card for Kennedy.

With the Titans down a man and the Bluejays using a short corner kick to send a long pass into the box, Elmhurst broke the stalemate with a header goal in the 62nd minute.

IWU hoped to make its impact in the 73rd minute as the Titans were awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box. Unfortunately, the long ball from freshman Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) could not find the bend to land the equalizer.

A yellow card on the Bluejays goalie at the 87 minute mark put IWU in penalty kick position. With Rodino taking the shot, he buried the PK to level the score at 1-1 with under three minutes left to play and marked Rodino's second goal of the season.

Elmhurst managed to get off one more shot before the end of regulation but the Bluejays would evidently add two additional yellow cards to the tally before the final whistle.

IWU is back at Neis Field Wednesday, Oct. 23 as they host North Central College for another round of CCIW action.
