Football Overpowers Millikin

Titans improve to 3-2 in CCIW, snap two-game skid

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A high-flying offense powered the Illinois Wesleyan University football team to a 51-8 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory over Millikin University Saturday afternoon, Oct. 19, at Tucci Stadium. The Titans (3-3, 3-2 CCIW) churned out a season-high 531 yards of total offense to blow by the Big Blue (0-6, 0-5 CCIW).

Illinois Wesleyan's offensive outburst was highlighted by a tremendous performance by junior Jahari Scott (Lake Bluff, Ill.-Lake Forest). Registering the first 100-yard rushing game of his career, Scott rushed for 122 yards on just nine carries with two touchdowns. He added four receptions for 59 yards to finish the day with nearly 200 all-purpose yards.

Sophomore Dermot Smyth (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) was incredibly efficient as he completed 17-of-24 passes for 274 yards and three TDs. Senior Myles Kee (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) grabbed three catches for 61 yards, while sophomore Danny Kent (Addison, Ill.-Fenwick) caught five passes with a score.

Defensively, IWU limited MU to just 176 yards of total offense. The Big Blue finished with 17 rushing yards and 159 passing yards. The Titans forced three turnovers, all of which came via interception as seniors Frank Roti (Orland Hills, Ill.-Andrew), Ryan Saxe (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), and Paul Zunkel (McHenry, Ill.-McHenry West) picked off passes. Sophomore John Gavin (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) made a team-high eight stops, one of which was a sack. In all, the Green and White defense totaled eight tackles for loss and four sacks. Senior Zach McNees (Hillsboro, Mo.-Hillsboro) was credited with two sacks and two QB hurries.

Sophomore Kaden Junge (Mattoon, Ill.-Mattoon) led the special teams efforts with a busy day. He went 3-for-3 in field goals, converting from 33, 28, and 31 yards. He also knocked through four PATs and kicked off nine times with two touchbacks.

With sophomore Alexander Jackson (Harvey, Ill.-Bremen) pressuring, Millikin's first possession came to a halt as Roti intercepted a pass to give the Titan offense the ball with great field position. A 21-yard catch by Kee down the IWU sideline pushed the Green and White into the endzone, where Smyth dropped a dart into the hands of Moore for the game's first score.

After double-digit gains on the ground by Kent and Scott, Deacy hauled in a key fourth down reception. Facing fourth down with six yards to go, Smyth connected with his fellow sophomore for a 21-yard gain to move the sticks and keep IWU's drive alive. The Titans turned to the ground game from there, as Kent ultimately punched it in. The Green and White used some trickery on the PAT as Saxe pitched it to Junge for a two-point conversion.

Illinois Wesleyan's lead stood at 15-0 into the second quarter, where the Titans continued rolling. Scott found the endzone for his first score of the day on a one-yard scamper, before Kent's three-yard touchdown grab extended the lead to 28-0 with six minutes left in half.

Illinois Wesleyan tacked on 10 more points before the break as Smyth threw a dime to junior Collin Elledge (Bethalto, Ill.-Civic Memorial) for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Junge later capped the first-half scoring with a 33-yard field goal as time expired to give Illinois Wesleyan a 38-0 lead at half.

Scott kickstarted the Titan offense in the third quarter, as IWU needed just 13 seconds to find the endzone. After the Green and White forced a punt, Scott squeezed through a gap before blowing by the Big Blue defense for a 63-yard touchdown.

A pair of field goals by Junge finished off the scoring for the Titans to extend IWU's advantage to 51-0. The Big Blue used a seven-play, 70-yard drive to avoid the shutout as the Titans rolled to a 51-7 win.

Illinois Wesleyan is back on the road next Saturday, Oct. 26, for a bout with North Park University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
