Bakirdan’s lone goal pushes IWU past Augustana

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team defeated College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Augustana College Wednesday night, Oct. 16 under the lights. The Titans rise to 9-1-2 on the season and are now 3-1 in conference. The Vikings dip to 4-5-1, falling to 1-4 in league play.

In the 34th minute of the game, senior Mush Bakridan (Morton, Ill.-Morton) continued his free kick finesse with the first and only goal of the game. With the help of sophomore Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), Bakirdan faked out the defenders, and put the ball high middle with a right foot kick.

The Titans ended the half with 13 shots on goal to the Vikings five, as well as IWU taking four corner kicks to the Vikings one. Junior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) finished with two saves in the net for 45 minutes.

In the second half, AC's goalie, Benjamin Samuelson, controlled the net, not letting the Titans score again. Sophomore Matthew Perchik (Glenview, Ill.-New Trier), took a shot on goal which bounced off Samuelson's hands, while senior Logan Shumaker (Decatur, Ill.-Mt. Zion) tried to take advantage of a shot which was also saved, point blank, by Samuelson.

The second half saw the Titans show some grit, taking another 14 shots with no luck of them falling. Opportunities arose for both sides of the field to score but no one was able to capitalize and the game ended 1-nil in favor of the Titans. Kedzior saw six more saves to round out an eight save game showing a great performance with 90 minutes in between the pipes.

The Titans are back on the road Saturday, Oct. 19 against the Bluejays of Elmhurst College. Game is set for 7 p.m. on Langhorst Field.
