Women’s Hoops Wins 10th Straight at NPU

13 Titans score in the road win

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team scored their tenth straight victory in a rout of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent North Park University, 81-49, Wednesday night, Jan. 10. The 10th ranked Titans improved their record to 13-2 on the season, including a perfect 6-0 in league play. The Vikings dip to 3-12 on the year and are still seeking their first conference victory.

It was a balanced offensive effort for the Titans, as Catie Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) led the way with 16 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting performance. Junior Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and sophomore Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) were the other double-digit scorers for the Green and White, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) led the Titans in nearly every other statistical category, recording six apiece in the rebounds, steals, and assists columns.

The Titans went 28-of-64 from the floor, including a 8-of-26 clip from deep. Illinois Wesleyan forced 26 turnovers, scoring 17 points off of Viking miscues. The Titans also led in bench points (34-17), rebounds (40-26), and points in the paint (34-16).

Illinois Wesleyan got off to a slow start, scoring just five points in the first five minutes of the game. The Vikings kept it tight, as the score stood at 12-10 with two minutes left in the first quarter before a three-pointer from junior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) and a jumper from White pushed the Titans to a 18-10 advantage to end the first quarter.

It was all Green and White from that point forward, as the Titans outscored the Vikings 23-10 in the second quarter, giving IWU a comfortable 41-19 lead heading into halftime.

A consecutive three-pointer, steal, and fastbreak layup from Launi Chanthaboury (St Charles, Ill.-St Charles North) started the fourth quarter off strong for the Titans. Sophomores Payton Jacob (St. Joseph, Ill.-St.Joseph-Ogden) and Martha Lipic (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), fifth-year Megan Moody (Gibson City, Ill.-Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley), and freshman Anna Beyers (Pana, Ill.-Pana) also put points on the board to seal a 81-49 win for the Green and White.

The Titans return home to the Shirk Center for the first time since Dec. 2 to host Carthage College this Saturday, Jan. 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the Titan's men's squad.
