11 Titans Score as Women’s Hoops Soars Past Firebirds

Five Titans score in double figures

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 10th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team defeated Carthage College, 97-76, inside the Shirk Center Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13. The Titans advanced to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with the win, while the Firebirds fell to 10-6 overall, 3-4 in league games.

Juniors Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) tied for the team lead with 18 points apiece, as the duo combined to go 7-for-12 from three-point range. Powers finished with 18 points, four boards, two assists, and a pair of steals, while Palmer went for 18 on 6-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) totaled 17 points with a team-high three steals. Junior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) finished with 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds, while Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) scored 10.

The Titans shot 55.6 percent from the field, going 35-for-63 overall, along with an 11-for-26 showing from three-point range. IWU finished 16-for-20 at the free throw line, rounding out advantages in all three aspects. Carthage was limited to 28-of-70 shooting and went just 29.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Firebirds converted 13-of-17 free throw tries.

Illinois Wesleyan edged Carthage 38-35 in the rebounding battle, while also compiling leads in points in the paint (36-34) and fast break scoring (17-2). Carthage held an upperhand in bench scoring, 34-26, and also won the turnover battle 16-15.

After scoring the game's first five points, Illinois Wesleyan saw a 10-2 run give Carthage a 10-7 edge at the first media timeout.

Out of the break, Huber found sophomore Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) for a short corner jumper to trim the deficit to one. The Firebirds responded though, moving back ahead by six, 16-10, before Knutson drove and kicked to Powers for a three-ball in front of the Carthage bench.

After a pair of free throws from Palmer, Bardic rejected a shot on defense and got the Titans out on a break for a layup from Knutson. The bucket gave IWU a 19-17 lead, its first since the early goings.

Leading 22-17 into the second quarter, the Green and White saw a three-pointer from Palmer force a Carthage timeout with 2:34 left in the half. The three-ball stretched IWU's lead to double digits into the break.

Illinois Wesleyan put a scorching third period together as the Titans shot 10-of-16 from the floor and 3-for-6 from distance to continue to cushion their lead. The Green and White outscored the Firebirds, 32-17, in the period before extending the IWU lead to as many as 32 in the fourth quarter.

The Titans host CCIW preseason favorite and 18th-ranked Millikin University Wednesday night, Jan. 17. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
