Men’s Soccer Falls to Greenville

PK ends men’s soccer’s win streak

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -  A penalty kick proved to be the difference as the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team saw its unbeaten start to the season snapped by Greenville University, 1-nil, Tuesday night, Sept. 12, at Neis Field.

The first half started with the Titans coming out strong with consistent pressure on the Greenville defense, but the Panthers held steady. Both teams held each other scoreless for the entirety of the half. The Titans and the Panthers were pretty evenly matched with the Titans at nine shots to Greenville's 10, while the keepers also stayed in a close battle as sophomore Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) had four saves while the Panthers goalie, Jaime Sainz, had two.

The second half saw back-and-forth action, but a penalty kick at the 57th minute mark proved to be the difference maker for the Panthers. Illinois Wesleyan kept pressing for a goal, getting a handful of corners in the final 15 minutes, but could not find the equalizer.

In all, Kedzior posted a career-high 10 saves. The Green and White edged the Panthers in shots, 18-17, but Greenville put 11 on frame to IWU's five. The Titans also created 13 corner opportunities, while surrendering just three defensively.

Illinois Wesleyan stays home, as the Titans host Lake Forest College Saturday, Sept. 16. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. start.
