Women’s Soccer Shutout by No. 23 Wartburg

Titans travel to Hope College Wednesday, Sept. 13

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team capped off its weekend at the Midwest Touranment in Waverly, Iowa with a 1-0 loss to No. 23 Wartburg College Sunday, Sept. 10. The Titans drop to a 1-3-0 record on the year while the Knights climb to 2-2-1. 

Illinois Wesleyan outshot Wartburg with eight attempts, five of which were on goal but struggled to beat Knights goalkeeper Alena Miller. 

The Titans led the first half of play in shots (5-3) while forcing three saves out of Miller. A corner kick in the 21st minute gave Wartburg the upperhand as Greta Rothe found an opening in the upper right corner of the net to give the Knights a 1-nil advantage.

The second half of play saw an even matchup with both teams attempting three shots and four corners. Junior midfielder Madalyn Buxton (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) led the Titans with three shots, putting two on goal. Junior goalkeeper, Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) picked up one save on six shots faced in the contest. 

Illinois Wesleyan continues its stretch of games on the road as the Titans head north to Holland, Mich. Wednesday, Sept. 13 to face Hope College. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (ET).
