Pullam’s Gem Against Pioneers Pushes Baseball’s Win Streak to Five

Titans post first shutout victory of the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Freshman Jake Pullam's (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) took a no-hitter into the sixth, as the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team extended its win streak to five, Tuesday evening, April 25, by defeating Carroll University, 4-0. With the important College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory secured, IWU's record improved to 15-18 (7-6 CCIW), while Carroll's record slipped to 15-16 (7-6 CCIW).

With a pitcher's duel brewing early on, senior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) recorded the first base knock for either side in the bottom of fourth, with two outs, on a single down the left field line. After a miscue by the Pios, which extended the frame, junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) laced a single through the left side. The single allowed Burgh to scamper home as his left hand touched the plate just ahead of the throw to give IWU the slim, 1-0, lead heading to the fifth.

IWU recorded three runs, on four hits, in the fifth to stake the 4-0 lead. After three straight singles, two of which were beautiful bunts, by junior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central), senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood), and junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech), the Titans loaded the bases. With one down, junior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) torched a sacrifice fly to center, which allowed Biggers to score to push the score to 2-0. With two on, Burgh welcomed a two RBI double to left to expand the advantage to 4-0.

After a 6.1 inning no-hit bid by Pullam, Carroll recorded its first hit of the contest on a seeing-eye single through the right side. Pullam's 6.1 innings without allowing a hit marks the longest no-hit bid of his career, and the longest of IWU's 2023 season.

With the Pios manufacturing bases loaded, with two outs, in the eighth, pitching coach Michael Kellar went out to the mound and kept his freshman hurler in the game. On his 113th pitch of the game, Pullam knuckled the CU hitter on an inside slider to retire the side and to earn his 10th strikeout of the game. Pullam's 10 strikeouts mark a new career-high and the first time the freshman has registered double-digit strikeouts in his career.

Cyrus came out of the outfield to pitch the ninth where he tossed a perfect 1-2-3 inning to preserve IWU's first shutout victory of the season, 4-0.

Pullam earned the victory (2-1) on the mound, tossing eight innings, the longest outing of his career. He scattered just three singles, struck out a career-high 10, and only surrendered one walk.

Offensively, the Titans outhit the Pios by a final tally of 8-3. Burgh led the offense with his 3-for-4 showing, while Biggers tallied a 2-for-4 contest. Burgh topped the team with his pair of RBI with Cyrus and Hutson each adding one apiece.

The Titans will travel to Moline, Ill. to take on the league leader, 25th-ranked Augustana College, for a twinbill with CCIW implications on the line. First pitch is set for Saturday, April 29, at 1 p.m.
