Baseball Sees Win-Streak Snapped by 25th-Ranked Augustana

Set to host Blackburn on Thursday, May 4

MOLINE, Ill. - With the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament hopes on the line, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team traveled to Moline, Ill. to tangle with the 25th-ranked Augustana College Vikings, Saturday, April 29 for a double dip. AC took game one by a final score of 10-2 and won the nightcap by a final tally of 12-2. After the setback, IWU's record now stands at 15-20, (7-8 CCIW), while AC, who upped their win streak to 12, now sits at 30-6 (13-2 CCIW).

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 2, Augustana 10
After loading the bases with no one out in the bottom of second, sophomore Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) limited the Vikings to just one run on a sacrifice fly. Banks induced a strikeout, flyball, and a harmless groundout to second to limit the damage as AC took the 1-0 lead after two innings of action.

The Vikings recorded six runs, on six hits, in the fifth inning to expand their cushion to 7-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Augie scored a pair of runs to extend the advantage to 9-0.

With two down in the top of the eighth, the Titans got on the scoreboard via a single to right by sophomore Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove). Junior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central), who laced a single to left earlier in the frame, came around to score to cut the deficit to 9-1.

Augustana got the run back in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff, solo homerun to right. After the round tripper, the score stood at 10-1 in favor of the home team.

In the top of the ninth, sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St.Laurence) dumped a single into center with runners on first and second. The base knock allowed senior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) scampered home to give IWU's its second run of the ballgame.

Illinois Wesleyan could not complete the comeback as AC took game one by the final score of 10-2.

AC outhit IWU by a final tally of 15-10. Figus and Biggers each notched a two hit game, while Figus and Gurgone logged one RBI each. Six other Titans added one hit.

On the bump, Banks toed the rubber for his 10th start of the year. The Springfield, Ill. native tossed five innings of work and allowed 10 hits on seven runs. The sophomore took the loss (6-2).

Sophomore Matt Maloney (Palos Heights, Ill.-Shepard) came out of the Titan bullpen and threw the final three innings. Maloney surrendered three runs on five hits.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 2, Augustana 12
In the nightcap, Augustana tagged IWU for three runs in the bottom of the first to race out to the quick, 3-0, lead.

After a leadoff single in the third by Biggers, senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) put a ball in play down the third base line. After making the backhand snag, the AC third baseman threw a one hop to first that handcuffed the first baseman as the ball made its way down the right field line. The errant throw allowed Biggers to score all the way from first while Ping made his way to second. After the error, the Titans got on the board by making the score 3-1.

The Vikings recorded a run in the bottom of the third to create the 4-1 lead and broke the game open by scoring five times in the fourth to expand the advantage to 9-1.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Jimmy Martin (Western Springs, Ill.-Fenwick) secured his first collegiate double and first collegiate RBI with his base knock that went right over the first base bag. Freshman Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) scored easily from first on the play as Augustana held the 10-2 lead.

AC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game by a final score of 12-2.

Augustana outhit the Titans by a final tally of 16-8. Eight different players secured a hit for Illinois Wesleyan as Martin notched the lone RBI of the contest.

Junior Luke Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill.-Richmond-Burton) earned the start on the bump for IWU. Uhwat logged 2.2 innings of work, while giving up four runs, one of which was earned, on six hits. Uhwat was given the loss (0-2) in the contest. IWU used six relievers to cover the remainder of the game.

The Green and White will complete their non-conference slate Thursday, May 4 by squaring off against Blackburn College. First pitch between the Beavers and Titans is set for 4 p.m. at Horenberger Field in Bloomington.
