Baseball Tops Beloit to Extend Win Streak to Four

Set to host Carroll, Tuesday, April 25

BELOIT, Wis. - Battling the cold and windy conditions, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball welcomed a six-run fifth inning against Beloit College, Sunday, April 23, to extend its win-streak to four. The Titan offense scored at least one run in the final five frames to earn the 11-5 victory. With the win, the Green and White upped its record to 14-18 on the year, while Beloit fell to 22-10.

Beloit manufactured bases loaded, with only out, in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Nate Carlson (Palatine, Ill.-St.Viator) struck out the next two hitters to end the threat and to keep the Buccaneers off of the scoreboard. Heading to the fourth, the game remained tied, 0-0.

IWU cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. After a single by senior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) singled, followed by two walks, the Titans loaded the bases with one down. Junior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) produced a sacrifice fly to left as Burgh crossed the plate. Later in the frame, with two outs, junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) delivered an RBI single to give the Green and White their second run of the contest.

Still in the fifth, continuing his career week at the dish, sophomore Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) roped his second hit of the game. This time, Figus tallied a pair of RBI as senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) and sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) came around to score. With second and third, junior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) whacked a double down the left field line, over the outstretched glove of the diving third baseman, to extend the IWU lead to 6-0, as Figus and Perona scored. After the barrage of hits, the Buccaneers made a move to the bullpen.

BC registered their first run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homerun. After the round-tripper, the score stood at 6-1.

However, the Titans got the run back in the sixth on a Gurgone double. Senior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West), who singled, then advanced on a wild pitch, came around to score to up the advantage to 7-1.

IWU and Beloit traded off one run frames in the seventh and eighth. As the game progressed to the bottom of the eighth, the Titans held the 9-2 cushion.

After a couple of hits, the Buccaneers cashed in on a two RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Burgh put the nail in the coffin in the top of the ninth with a two-run rocket of a home run to left. With the four-bagger, IWU welcomed the 11-4 advantage.

Burgh entered the game on the mound and tossed the ninth to lead the Green and White to the 11-5 victory.

The Titans outhit the Buccaneers by a final tally of 14-10. Burgh tied his career-high of hits as he notched a 4-for-5 game. Perona, Figus, and Bleker each produced a pair of hits, while four Titans each manufactured a pair of RBI.

Sophomore Matt Maloney (Palos Heights, Ill.-Shepard) registered his first victory on the bump (1-0) this season by tossing three innings out of the bullpen. Carlson got the start on the mound where he hurled four scoreless innings, while scattering two hits.

The Green and White will continue College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action with a home contest, Tuesday, April 25 against Carroll University, where IWU will try to earn a split in the two-game season series. First pitch at Horenberger Field is slated for 4 p.m.
