Baseball Falters to Carroll

Set to host Eureka tomorrow, April 19, at 6 p.m.

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team continued College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action by traveling to Waukesha, Wis. to tangle with Carroll University. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth, the Pios recorded a pair of runs to take the close, 4-2, victory. As a result of the setback, IWu"s record now sits at 10-18 (4-6 CCIW), while Carroll's record upped to 14-12 (7-3 CCIW).

After a pitcher's duel broke out for the first 4.2 innings of innings of action, the Pios cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with a bases loaded walk to take the 1-0 lead.

Carroll tallied an insurance run in the sixth on a dropped third strike, after a leadoff two-bagger and a sacrifice bunt to push the Pio runner to third. After six innings of action, CU claimed the 2-0 cushion.

With one down in the top of the seventh, IWU recorded their first run of the contest. Senior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) singled up the middle and then swiped second to get himself into scoring position. Coming into the game as a pinch hitter, sophomore Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) made his presence known by lacing a single down the right field line as Bleker raced around third and crossed the plate to push the deficit to 2-1. The key base knock warranted a pitching change from the Carroll dugout. Heading to the bottom of the seventh, IWU trailed Carroll by a score of 2-1.

The Titans tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth after a costly two-out error by the Pios. Junior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) tagged an offering to left field and the CU outfielder misplayed the chance. Junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame, came around to score on the misplay.

Carroll re-took the lead, 3-2,  in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single. CU tallied a run on another dropped third strike to push their advantage to 4-2.

The CU bullpen thwarted IWU's comeback efforts in the ninth to walk away with the 4-2 victory. IWU had the bases loaded in the ninth, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

The Titans outhit Carroll by a final tally of 9-5. Senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) paced the offense with his 3-for-5 afternoon, while sophomore Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) recorded two hits.

Freshman Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) drew the start on the bump for the Titans. Pullam tossed 4.2 innings, while only surrendering two hits. The Palatine, Ill. native struck out a career-high eight batters in the outing.

Cyrus was tagged with the loss (1-4) out of the Titan bullpen.

The Green and White will take a break from CCIW action by taking on Eureka College, tomorrow, April 19. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Horenberger Field in Bloomington.
