Baseball’s Offense Erupts for Victory Over Eureka

Figus set new career-high with 5 RBI

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team rattled off 11 runs, Wednesday, April 19 against Eureka College in a non-conference bout at Horenberger Field to secure the 11-1 victory. With the win, IWU's record upped to 11-18, while the Red Devils record slipped to 6-21.

IWU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) led off the game with a base on balls, then junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) drove a double down the left field line to set up second with no one out. Sophomore Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) laced a line drive single right over the shortstop which allowed Ping and Perona to both scamper home to generate the 2-0 lead.

Still with no one out, back-to-back hit by pitches by junior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) and junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) to load the bases, warranted a pitching change from the Red Devil dugout. With one out and the bases full, senior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) recorded a sacrifice fly as Figus came around to score to push the cushion to 3-0 after the first frame.

With two down in the home half of the fourth, Perona roped a triple to right center. Sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), who reached base via a hit by pitch, came around to score. With a runner on third, Figus placed a perfectly placed ball right over the third base bag for a double to bring in Perona to expand the lead to 5-0.

The Red Devils scored a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-1.

IWU's offense exploded for five runs, on four hits,  in the fifth to push their advantage to 10-1.

With the bases full in the bottom of the seventh, Cyrus earned a walk to allow the game-winning run to jog home to welcome the 11-1 victory.

The Green and White outhit the Red Devils by a final tally of 9-7. Perona and Figus led the charge by both producing 3-for-4 evenings at the dish. Figus set a new career-high with 5 RBI with his two doubles.

Senior Will Jackson (Glenview, Ill.-Loyola Academy) earned his first win (1-2) wearing the Titan uniform by tossing two innings and striking out a pair. Five other pitchers logged action in the victory.

The Titans will turn their attention to a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series against Wheaton College, Friday, April 21. First pitch of the home doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
