Men’s Tennis Secures Senior Day Win Over Carroll

Titans secure first double-digit wins in a season since 2010–11

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team will finish with double-digit wins, as the Titans secured a senior day victory over College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Carroll University Sunday, April 16. The win moves IWU to 10-9 overall, and 2-4 in CCIW contests. It is the most wins in a season under fifth-year head coach Sam Totten.

IWU honored lone senior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) prior to the match.

The Titans used a sweep at doubles to jump out in front. Burk and freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) grabbed a win at No. 1 doubles with a score of 8-3. Juniors Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and Evan Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 pairs. Freshman Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and sophomore Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) closed out the sweep with an 8-0 decision at No. 3 doubles.

In the singles portion, McCoy used set scores of 6-2 and 6-3, to take the win at No. 2. Burk continued his senior day by picking up his second win of the match, as the Bloomington, Ill. native won both sets, 6-1, to win at No. 3 singles. Vigneri was victorious at No. 4 singles, winning both sets 6-3, while Evan Turnbull notched a No. 5 singles victory with set scores of 6-0, 6-2. Cross closed out the match with a No. 6 singles win, using all three sets to do so. The sophomore dropped the first set, 6-3, but staged a comeback, taking the second set 6-3, and closing out the match with a 10-4 tiebreaking set win.

With the regular season complete, Illinois Wesleyan awaits its matchup in the CCIW Tournament, set to begin Thursday, April 27.
