Baseball Unable to Secure Series Over Elmhurst

Set to play Carroll, Tuesday, April 18

ELMHURST, Ill. - After three costly miscues, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball was unable to take the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series against Elmhurst University, Saturday, April 15, at Butterfield Field in Elmhurst, Ill. As a result, the Bluejays took the rubber game by a final score of 11-3. With the setback, IWU's record now stands at 10-17 (4-5 CCIW), while EU's record upped to 12-13 (4-5 CCIW).

After being on the receiving end of back-to-back Bluejay throwing errors, IWU capitalized on a sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) sacrifice fly to generate the 1-0 advantage in the top of the second. As a result, junior Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) scampered home on the play.

Elmhurst tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to grab the 5-1 advantage.

With one down in the top of the sixth, senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) recorded IWU's first extra base hit of the contest with his double to left center. After a flyout, senior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) belted his first homerun of the year, and fourth of his career, to dead center. After the round tripper, IWU cut the deficit to 5-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bluejays took advantage of a costly IWU fielding error by producing three runs to push their advantage to 8-3.

An EU three-run homer extended the home team's lead to 11-3 after seven innings of action.

The Elmhurst bullpen was able to shut the door and earn the 11-3 victory.

The Bluejays outhit IWU by a final tally of 11-7. Ping led the offense with his 2-for-4 showing, while Burgh tacked on two RBI.

Five IWU hurlers saw action to cover the eight innings. Junior Luke Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill.-Richmond-Burton) suffered the loss (0-1) as he worked 3.2 innings.

The Titans will continue CCIW action with a midweek matchup against Carroll University, Tuesday, April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Frame Park in Waukesha, Wis.
