Men’s Tennis Sweeps First Day of Spring Break Trip

Titans defeated Emerson College and Colby-Sawyer College

ORLANDO, Fla. - After a rainout on the first day of the trip, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team finally got to take the courts in Orlando, Fla., by making the most of the opportunity. The Titans began the day with a 7-2 victory over Emerson College before taking down Colby-Sawyer College, 5-4, to improve to 6-4 on the season. 

The win over Emerson (0-8) saw a dominant performance in the doubles portion of the match, as all three Titan pairs were victorious. Freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) paired up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and Evan Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) took an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Ben Vigneri (Cheyenne, Wyo.-Philips Exeter Academy) and sophomore Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) closed out the doubles portion with an 8-4 win at No. 3.

The Titans used wins at No. 3-6 to secure the first victory of the spring break trip. Burk used all three sets to get the job done at No. 3, winning with set scores of 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Vigneri was victorious with set scores 7-5, 6-1. Evan Turnbull used a tiebreaker to secure a win in two sets at No. 5, as he won with scores 7-6(0), 6-0. The Titans saw freshman Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) close out the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. 

In the second match of the day, the Titans edged out Colby-Sawyer (2-7), 5-4. McCoy and Vigneri paired up at No. 2 doubles to pick up an 8-4 decision, while Evan Turnbull and Hammond were 8-4 winners at No. 3 doubles.

Ian Turnbull got the Titans out in front in the individual portion of the match, winning 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. At No. 5 singles, Evan Turnbull picked up his fourth combined win of the day with scores 6-4, 6-4. Cross secured the victory for the Green and White with 6-4, 6-3 set wins at No. 6 singles. 

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action in a rescheduled match against Ohio Wesleyan University Thursday, March 16 at 8 p.m. ET. The match was originally scheduled for Monday, March 13, but was rained out. Results will be posted on iwusports.com upon the completion of the match.
