BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -
The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball cruised past Carroll University Saturday evening, Feb. 4, in the team's annual PinkZone game benefiting the community cancer center. IWU (13-9, 8-5 CCIW) led from the opening tip and never looked back, finishing with a 78-55 win over CU (14-7, 9-3 CCIW).

Freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) put up a monster game with career-highs of 19 points and six steals, while also recording seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) went for 15 points, aided by a trio of three-pointers, and fellow sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) tallied 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals. Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and freshman Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) notched 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Titans turned in a strong offensive performance which saw IWU hand out 20 assists. The Green and White finished 46.3 percent from the field (31-of-67) and connected on 9-of-24 three-point tries (37.5 percent), while going 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Carroll was limited to 18-of-47 (38.3) from the floor, 2-for-11 from three, and committed 29 turnovers. CU hit 17-of-23 free throw attempts.

IWU held a commanding 27-6 lead in points off turnovers, while also holding leads in points in the paint (32-22) and transition points (25-8). Carroll led in bench scoring 33-21.

Huber corralled the opening tip and quickly hit a layup to get the game started, before White cashed in for a layup off a CU turnover just over a minute and a half in. The swipe and score put the Titans up 9-3 and forced an early Carroll timeout.

Illinois Wesleyan stretched its lead to six, but ultimately took a 17-13 lead into the second quarter.

After opening the period with a quick four-point spurt, senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) found Mahlum on a skip pass for a three-ball from the wing. The fastbreak bucket, which saw one of Heller's seven assists on the night, upped the advantage to nine, 28-19, with 6:15 on the clock.

IWU kept things rolling as Heller fed Knutson for a jumper one minute later, pushing the lead to 31-19.

Coming out of the half in control, 46-32, the Titans used a 9-0 run to expand their lead to as many as 29 in the third quarter.

The Green and White maintained a comfortable cushion from there, running away with a 78-55 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan remains at home Wednesday, Feb. 8, for a rematch with conference foe Millikin University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
