Women's Hoops Drops Home Game to Millikin

Titans travel to North Central Saturday, Feb. 11, for 5 p.m. tip

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team lost to Millikin University Wednesday night, Feb. 8, inside the Shirk Center. With the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin loss, IWU dips to 13-10 on the year and 8-6 in league games. Meanwhile, Millikin maintained its lead in the conference at 18-4 (12-1 CCIW).

Sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) tallied 14 points. Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) added 10 points each.

Illinois Wesleyan bounced back from a troublesome first quarter to shoot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the floor on the night. The Titans connected on 5-of-15 three-point tries (33 percent) and went 8-for-13 at the free throw line. Millikin used 13 three-pointers to take down the Titans, as the Big Blue shot 46.4 percent from beyond the arc. MU went 31-for-68 (45.6 percent) from the floor overall and 7-for-12 at the charity stripe.

The major difference came in the turnover battle, where Millikin forced 22 IWU miscues en route to a 33-8 points off turnovers advantage. Illinois Wesleyan held small leads in points in the paint, 34-32, and fast break scoring, 15-11.

Eight first quarter turnovers led to 21 Millikin points as the Big Blue carried a 27-7 lead into the second period.

The Titans found more consistency on offense over the next 10 minutes, as the Green and White connected on 8-of-16 shots in the period. A baseline jumper from Huber got the quarter rolling. Palmer hit a layup off a backdoor pass from senior Megan Moody (Gibson City, Ill.-Gibson City/Melvin Sibley) to cap a six-point IWU run as the period neared its midpoint.

A fastbreak layup from freshman Sara Balli (Lake Park, Ill.-Lake Park) trimmed the deficit to 12, but the Big Blue took a 45-26 lead into halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan rallied behind its defense in the third quarter, pulling within as few as nine but would not get any closer in the defeat.

The Titans head to North Central College Saturday, Feb. 11, for a 5 p.m. contest against the Cardinals at Gregory Arena.
