Men’s Tennis Set to Open Spring Season

Titans will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on Cedarville and Greenville

2/3/2023 3:00:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team will kick off the 2023 portion of its schedule Saturday, Feb. 4, in Indianapolis, Ind. The Titans will take on Cedarville University and Greenville University at 12:30 p.m. EST. The matches will resemble a dual match, but will take place at the same time due to court availability.

This will mark the first dual match of the season for the Green and White, as in the fall, the team competed in three tournaments. The most recent competition took place on Sept. 23 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships. Senior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High), junior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows), and freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) competed in the tournament.

The dual against Cedarville, a Division II institution, will mark the fifth matchup between the two schools. The last time the two faced off was on Feb. 26, 2022, in which the Titans fell 7-0.

IWU will face Greenville for the ninth time in program history, with the Panthers holding a 6-2 advantage all-time. The teams matched up last on March 4, 2022, with Greenville taking down the home team 7-2. Burk and McCoy paired up at No. 2 doubles in the match and walked away with an 8-7 victory. Then fifth-year Justin Piotrowski was the only Titan to secure a singles victory, doing so in tiebreaking fashion.

Results will be posted on iwusports.com following the completion of the match.
