Softball Swept by Transy in Opener

Titans travel to St. Louis, Mo. next weekend, March 4-5

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team began its 2023 campaign Sunday, Feb. 26, with a non-conference doubleheader at Transylvania University. After falling via walk-off, 2-1, in the opener, the Titans (0-2) dropped the second leg, 5-0, to the Pioneers (5-1).

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 1, Transylvania 2
Illinois Wesleyan came back with a run in the top of the fifth to level the score at one all, as sophomore Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) led the inning off with a single through the left side. Junior Hope Yeoman's (Lafayette, Ind.-William Henry Harrison) sacrifice bunt allowed Khoury to move all the way to third, before the sophomore scampered home on a wild pitch.

With the game tied, 1-1, into Transy's half of the fifth, senior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) entered the circle in relief. She pitched around a two-out walk to keep the game knotted into the sixth, where she tossed a 1-2-3 inning.

A one-out single from junior Priscilla Peek (Deer Creek, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), the first of her Titan career, came with one away in the top of the seventh. Despite getting the go-ahead run on, a foul out and ground out brought Transy back to the plate.

The Pioneers capitalized on a leadoff walk, winning the game with an RBI double as IWU fell, 2-1.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with four hits to seven by Transylvania, as four different Titans recorded base knocks. Transy registered the lone extra-base hit of the game, the walk-off double.

Senior Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) tossed the first four innings, allowing one run on six hits and three walks, while striking out one. Mardjetko, who was the pitcher of record, threw 2.1 innings with one strikeout and three free passes as the Pioneers tagged her for one run on one hit.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, Transylvania 5
Transylvania plated three runs on four hits and an error in the first to charge ahead, 3-0. Freshman Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) made her collegiate debut, and after giving up a base hit, promptly escaped the jam. With two on, Certa induced an inning-ending flyout to send the game to the second.

The Pioneers tacked on an insurance run in the third, upping their advantage to 4-0, as the game entered fourth. Transy would score once more to sweep the doubleheader with a 5-0 final.
The Pioneers outhit the Titans, 10-2, in the game, with senior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.

In her first collegiate game, Certa tossed six innings. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out five.

The Titans travel to St. Louis, Mo. next weekend for a tournament hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. There, IWU will take on host WashU and Coe College in split doubleheaders Saturday-Sunday, March 4-5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, against WashU, with a game against Coe to follow. Sunday sees IWU battle the Kohawks first, in an 11 a.m. first pitch, with the Titans and Bears squaring off after.
