Softball Rallies to Top No. 23 WashU, Falls to Coe

Titans face Kohawks tomorrow, March 5, at 11 a.m.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team began play in St. Louis, Mo. Saturday, March 4, toppling the 23rd-ranked Washington University in St. Louis before falling to Coe College in the final game of the day at the WashU Invite. IWU mounted a seventh-inning comeback to best the Bears, 9-7, but saw a rally stalled, 4-3, against the Kohawks.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 9, No. 23 WashU 7
A ferocious comeback by the Titans saw IWU erase a 7-0 deficit with a two-out, seventh-inning rally. Senior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) got the rally started with a one-out single. Junior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) followed with a rip to left, and the two promptly swiped bases. Sophomore Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) came through in the clutch with a two-run single to right and scooted into second on junior Bailey Turner's (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) base knock.

With IWU trailing 7-5, junior Maya Black (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for junior Priscilla Peek (Deer Creek, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame). Taking advantage of the opportunity for her first RBI in a Titan uniform, Peek belted a double to center, scoring two, and evening the score at seven.

Junior Hope Yeoman (Lafayette, Ind.-William Henry Harrison) completed the comeback with an infield single. Black crossed home safely and Peek came around on an errant throw to push IWU ahead, 9-7.

Senior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) shut the door on the comeback in the bottom of the seventh, working around a leadoff triple. WashU put the squeeze on, but Yeoman got the runner at first before Khoury tossed it back to get the runner at home.

Turner finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Fontanetta and Black also picked up multi-hit games. Fontanetta crushed the first homer of the season for the Titans to go along with two driven in, while Black went 2-for-2 with a walk, run scored, and RBI.

Mardjetko earned the win in relief, tossing five innings of three-hit ball. She allowed one run, unearned, and struck out one without yielding a walk or HBP.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Coe 4
The Titans struck first, going for two runs in the top of the second, but the Kohawks scored one in the bottom of the inning, another in the third, and two more in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

Illinois Wesleyan used a wild pitch to score junior Isabelle Piwowarczyk (Hometown, Il.-Oak Lawk) in the seventh, but saw its comeback stop there, 4-3.

The Green and White will take on the Kohawks and Bears again tomorrow to wrap up this weekend's play. First pitch between Coe and IWU is set for 11 a.m. tomorrow, March 5, with the Titans tangling with the Bears at 3 p.m.
