Men’s Tennis Splits Trip in Iowa

Titans beat Cornell before falling to Coe

MOUNT VERNON & CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Illinois Wesleyan University split on its road trip in Iowa Saturday, Feb. 25. The Titans (4-4) began the day with an 8-1 win over Cornell College before falling to Coe College, 9-0.

In the first stop of the day, Illinois Wesleyan took down Cornell College (3-4). In the singles portion of the dual, freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) got the Titans started with a 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Coming off his College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week nomination, junior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) continued his strong play with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Freshman Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Philips Exeter Academy) was victorious at No. 4 singles, winning with scores of 6-0, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, junior Evan Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) won a 6-4, 6-2 decision, and freshman Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) closed out the individual portion of the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

Ian Turnbull paired up with senior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) at No. 1 doubles to take an 8-3 victory. McCoy and Evan Turnbull won at No. 2 in 8-4 fashion. Vigneri and junior Zeke Cross (Springifield, Ill.-Springfield) closed out the match with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Titans then made the quick trip to Cedar Rapids to face Coe, who moved to 6-1 on the season, on the second leg of the trip, 9-0.

The next time the Titans will compete will be in Orlando, Fla. for their spring break trip, where they will play four matches over five days, Mar. 13-17.
